Basketball builds another bridge: Canvas in Lagos

Ejimofor “E.J.” Anosike was born on Staten Island, into a Nigerian family. He went on to build a professional basketball career overseas. Read that in either direction and it says the same thing, which is exactly the bridge Canvas is trying to strengthen: local roots becoming global achievement, and that achievement coming back around to the next kid.

This summer, Canvas Institute joined Anosike and local partners in supporting a youth basketball tournament in Lagos, making a generous donation to help organizers give the participating young people a real experience — not a scaled-down version of one.

Why a tournament counts as youth work

It is a fair question, and the answer is not complicated. On a court, young people practise discipline because the game demands it. They practise teamwork because they cannot win without it. They learn resilience the hard way, in front of people. They find out what leadership feels like when a teammate needs something from them. And they belong to something, which for some of them is the part that matters most.

Canvas supports youth basketball in Staten Island for the same reasons. Lagos is not a different programme. It is the same one, in another place, with partners who know their own community far better than we do.

The shape of the bridge

Anosike's story is the argument in miniature. A young person from Staten Island with Nigerian family, who went out into the world, did the work, and is now spending some of what he earned on young people in Lagos — including about 20 customized bags he presented to participants at the Youth Empowerment Summit in Abuja.

That is what Canvas means by a living bridge. Not a metaphor about two countries, but specific people carrying opportunity back and forth across it.
